What is Fall Hacks?

Fall Hacks 2026 will be the sixth Fall Hacks hosted at Simon Fraser University.

Fall Hacks is an annual, beginner-first, 12 hour hackathon, intended to welcome new students into the world of competitive programming and foster the growing passions of recurring participants. Fall Hacks prioritizes the student experience in every way; from free workshops for attendees, to mentorship help throughout the event, Fall Hacks is designed to give back to the SFU computing science community. This year Fall Hacks will be on November 7th.

Students participate in a team to bring a project to life, utilizing programming and design skills. They are given 10 hours to brainstorm, develop, and present their projects to industry judges; developing real-world skills for a competitive job market.

Wait, what actually is a hackathon?

A hackathon is an competitive event where several teams develop a programming project inspired by an event-provided theme/prompt. You will have 12 hours to develop something cool from scratch at Fall Hacks.

Can I participate solo?

Yes! If you prefer to not participate in a team, you may participate in Fall Hacks solo. There a prize category dedicated just for solo hackers.

Where is Fall Hacks?

This year, Fall Hacks will be in-person at Simon Fraser University. Hacker sign-ins will be at the Applied Science Building (ASB) entrance. Workshops will also be hosted in the ASB. During the event, you are free to work in any open study space at SFU.

Why should I participate?

By participating you will get real experience with new technologies and navigate teamwork dynamics to accomplish a goal. Hackathon projects are also a great addition to a resume! There are also prizes and free food.

I am in my first year/don't have much experience, should I still participate?

Yes! This hackathon is a great learning opportunity for people with less development experience. Think of Fall Hacks as a hackathon with training wheels to prepare you for larger hackathons. We'll also be hosting HACKATHON 101 workshops the week leading up to Fall Hacks to prepare you for the event.

Can I work on my previous projects?

No, we want you to create something awesome from scratch in 12 hours. Starting from an existing project is against the spirit of the event. Existing open-source libraries and frameworks are fine, of course. Ask an organizer if you are unsure.
